CRISPR/Cas9 has enabled the efficient generation of novel rodent models.  The Jackson Laboratory in particular is working to create 1,000 different lines of modified mice with funding provided by the NIH.  Additionally, rats may be making a comeback as a model system.  Traditional genetic engineering techniques have not worked well with rats, however CRISPR/Cas9 may soon change the availability of rat models.
